How to acquire a start-up in Silicon Valley for a Japanese company to execute Open Innovation
Nov. 11, 2015 — Shusaku Sumida, WCP Managing Director, presented on how Japanese companies can acquire start-ups in Silicon Valley at a seminar in Tokyo, organized by Japan Venture Capital. More than 70 corporate development and business development executives and financial investors gathered at EGG Japan of Mitsubishi Estate.
Sumida pointed out that certain acquisition practices of technology start-ups limits the growth opportunities for Japanese companies, and outlined three key success factors in making effective open innovations and three key issues in the process of M&A of start-ups. He also discussed how there is no royal road for success, but that M&A expertise and knowledge is required, which WCP is available to assist with.
Mr. Shimoda, Attorney of Squire Patton Boggs, discussed legal issues and Sue Diligences at M&A process. A very active Q&A session included discussion on of reasons for success/failure, key employees retention, searching target companies, difference in business Law, motivation of entrepreneurs, and high valuation of some start-ups.
